A Club for Teenagers, Part 1
This is Part One in a series about our new teen club, Pahlawan Kristus.
Ideally, I think it is the parents’ job to develop and nourish a child spiritually and guide them while slowly “letting go” during the later years. However, this society is highly segregated by age. Most churches have services for teenagers and children are to be seen and not heard. As I have mentioned before, there is plenty of verbal and physical abuse, so I doubt the teenagers are receiving much encouragement or spiritual guidance at home. This is where the church comes in.
On our home page and blog I have mentioned that I started a teen club called Pahlawan Kristus in September 2009. The idea was placed on my heart nearly two years ago when I realized we had no class or service for young people in junior high and high school. I feel like we already have a fairly strong children’s program, but there has been a gap in the teen department. There are plenty of temptations here including dropping out of school, drinking, and teenage pregnancy, which is becoming the norm. If we lose them in the teen years, there isn’t much of a future for the church. Something must be done.
Mainly because of lack of education, some of the teenagers seem to be on a different level mentally than Western teens. Therefore, finding a program for American teenagers wouldn’t quite be appropriate, not to mention the drastic cultural differences. I also had specific goals in mind for the curriculum such as:
- teaching the main doctrines of the Bible
- taking them through the Bible chronologically
- teaching them the history and meaning of “Baptist”
- strong emphasis on memorizing key Scriptures
All of these goals have a part in building a firm foundation with the result of having doctrinally sound church members. To be continued…
Stay tuned for Part Two!
